At first glance, Sarah doesn't look very intimidating. A soft-spoken 12 year old martial arts student at PowerKenpo, Sarah is a junior 1st brown belt in American Kenpo Karate.

But as soon Sarah steps onto the sparring mat, she transforms — often competing against multiple opponents who are larger, stronger and older than she is.

And winning.

"I started taking classes four years ago, when I was eight. I used to be really shy, and didn't want to come to classes at first. But after awhile I started sparring and I got really into it."

Sarah's parents say that she's more vocal in school now, raising her hand to speak up more frequently than before. She's also competed in several American Kenpo Karate tournaments ... always choosing the sparring competitions because, as Sarah puts it, "I get to hit people."

"I used to be really shy but now I can do more things. I also really love the sparring classes (because I get to hit people) and the teachers here are really nice. I just like being here."

When she's not pummeling kids twice her size, Sarah attends a local Carrollton school where she also plays lacrosse and basketball. Her favorite subject is math, and she finds some similarities between mathematics and the martial arts: "They're both very logical, which I like."

Sarah plans to test for her junior black belt later this year.
