Basic Concepts of American Kenpo Karate
These basic concepts of motion, force, gravity and torque are required for promotion to your next belt. As you get better, your understanding of each should also improve.
1: Torque
- Rotate your hand as you strike to provide an extra 'pop' at the strike can greatly magnify the hit
2: Travel
- We tend to make short, choppy motions
- Travel increases power
- We want to use the maximum travel consistent with maintaining balance
3: Marriage of Gravity
- Letting gravity add to your power
- Example: As you strike with a hand sword, bend your knees and drop your weight
- This will add power to the hand sword
4: Backup Mass
- Putting your weight behind the strike
- It's important to get backup mass without getting so much backup mass that you find yourself off balance if the target moves and you miss it
5: Borrowed Force
- Using your opponent's force against him
- Basically, time your strike so that you catch your opponent moving towards the strike
- You can creat your own borrowed force: you might kick to the groin, causing his head to move forward, meeting your punch
6: Point of Origin
- Each strike starts where it is
- This sounds basic, but in practice, we tend to chamber our hit, drawing back
- Each hit goes from its' point of origin to the target, with no side trips
